The Elmwood
At 2515 Ashby Avenue you are living in the heart of the Elmwood, one of the Bay Area's most vibrant neighborhoods! Home to some of Berkeley's grandest old residences, the Elmwood has a small-town atmosphere with close proximity to downtown Berkeley and the University. It is also one of the best commuter neighborhoods, providing easy access by bus and BART to San Francisco.
Elmwood developed just before the turn-of-the-century as a fashionable suburb for San Franciscans. A few Victorians were erected before 1900, but the real boom came a few years later when a mixture of vernacular bungalows, shingled boxes, period revival homes, and well-built small apartment buildings filled the neighborhood's quiet tree-lined streets.
College Avenue, Elmwood's main shopping street, is home to endless boutique clothing and gift shops, outdoor cafes and restaurants, a branch of the Berkeley Library, its very own movie house - the historic Elmwood Rialto Cinema - and the beautiful Julia Morgan Center for the Arts which brings a diversity of productions into the neighborhood.
You can purchase your travel books, book your next vacation, buy fresh baked goods, pick up a coffee, go to the salon, grab your dry cleaning, go to the bank, purchase that new outfit, shoes and jewelry, buy children's clothing and toys, meet with your optician, visit the wine merchant, indulge in a scoop of gourmet ice cream, pick up the video, and ship your packages - all before you select where you'll stop and grab a bite at more than 15 restaurants and cafes!
Having friends in for dinner? Pick up your fresh flowers in the Elmwood and, if you can't find what you need at nearby Whole Foods or Andronico's Market, or the new Trader Joe's, try your luck at the individual food shops further along College Avenue towards the Rockridge!
The Elmwood provides a welcome retreat for those seeking all the amenities and sophistication of city life, but within a relaxed suburban environment. Here you will find a great selection of goods and services, and wonderful food all conveniently located and easy to get to from anywhere in the Bay Area.
Near to UC Berkeley, the Claremont Resort, and transportation - including BART.
